Mayor's Breakfast and Men in Kilts

Friday morning at the crack of dawn (well, 7:30 a.m.) we had the Mayor's Breakfast for the Austin Under 40 Awards. (I hear I was seen in the crowd on the noon news.) It was good to meet a few of the other people in my category and the people arranging the Awards. The gala this Friday already has sold out, and I'm really looking forward to it!

Later that day, my mom came in town. My mom,
Ellen, and I went to "The Black Watch and the Band of the Welsh Guards" at the Frank Erwin Center. The Black Watch is a battalion in the modern British Army, and the Band of the Welsh Guards is known for their "Changing The Guard" ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

My mom went ga-ga after all the military guys and had me take pictures with a bunch of them. The one by himself is Andy - notice his quartet of medals there. The show was cool - they played music (including bagpipes) and did some jig dancing - and of course, were wearing kilts and big furry black hats!

Afterwards, we went over to the Driskill 1886 Cafe and had a fantastic time there, too! Unfortunately, we didn't run in to any of the resident ghosts - maybe next time.

Great pics, though I notice someone was conveniently cropped out of one of them ;)

You saw the Black Watch (a/k/a the 42nd Highlanders ?) Way cool ! Saw them in Houston years ago with the Royal Marines. The BW's quite a famous unit, with loads and loads of history: lots of people laughed at those men in silly kilts and didn't live to regret it.

Never have heard the band of the the Welsh Guards. Not near as old as the BW, but a unit with a very impressive history also.

Wow, your mom really looks like you, or your pics at any rate
